Laila Cyclone Forced 70,000 People to Shift in Andhra Relief Camp

HYDERADABAD (DLN), 21st May 2010: Above 70,000 persons have been removed & moved to 300 aid campgrounds due to Cyclone Laila” struck sea-shore area of Andhra Pradesh (AP). A massive population was removed in 4 southern costal regions of Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna & Nellore.

As per the official announcement on Friday, around 170,000 edible items packs & 6.34 lakh water packets were supplied in the relief camps. In addition, 17 persons have been died since the cyclone Laila struck the sea-shore on Thursday. Also, 10 people lost their life in rain linked events since Tuesday.

Krishna area witnessed 7 killings. While four people were died in Nellore, Guntur accounted for 3 deaths; East Godavari witnessed 2 & Prakasham 1. 3 people are absent. As per the opening information, 5,800 hectares of irrigational field & 6,060 hectares of horticulture crops were harmed.

262 boats related to several fishermen have lost. The declaration revealed 260 boats were missed in Prakasham district and near about 1,450 boats were smashed in 7 regions.

The strong winds & intense rain-showers harmed 108 power substations influencing power supply in 1,047 villages. Officials told 85 homes were entirely destroyed while 187 were destroyed partly.
