Summer Solstice 2010
The word ‘solstice’ has been derived from the Latin words ‘sol’ (Sun) and ‘sistere’ (to stand still).
This day marks the longest day in the northern hemisphere, and the shortest day in the other half of the earth, in the Southern Hemisphere. [Summer solstice [longest day of the year] in Pictures]
This day is celebrated in many civilized nations throughout the world with full of colors. Many cultures also worship God on this auspicious day. Though the belief differs from culture to culture, but broadly the day is recognized as a sign of fertility.
It does not hold only religious values; it has some scientific values as well. This is the day when the earth becomes tilted away from the Sun in the northern hemisphere, and towards the Sun in the southern hemisphere.
Many people believe the day to bring luck and prosperity.
