Anna Chapman
Anna Chapman, arrested by the New York police Department for allegedly spying for the Russian intelligence, had projected herself as an entrepreneur looking forward to create businesses that would connect New York and Moscow.
She has also been an ardent user of social networking sites, including Facebook and LinkedIn. Chapman, along with other nine suspects now face charges for acting on the orders of Russian intelligence to dive deep into the American society and finally reach the policy making level to pass on information.
If convicted they face a jail of not less than five years. Chapman is currently kept in a Manhattan jail for the non bail able offence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz however has cautioned the current events as just the ‘tip of the iceberg’. He feels that many secret agents are still on loose. Chapman was arrested after she was forced into a trap by an FBI undercover agent.
Meanwhile, Russian officials have pushed aside the allegations and pointed out that those interested in spoiling the relations between the two nations were behind the current happenings. However, the heads of both the nations hoped that the incident will not disturb the relations between the countries. Chapman’s mother, Irina Kushchenko has also expressed her confidence that her daughter was innocent.
