The city of Surat is once again on flood alert ahead of heavy rain forecast that may force a huge quantity of water to be released from Ukai dam. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted 11.5 inch rainfall on Wednesday, a revision from the earlier stipulated 23 inches. According to District Collector A J Shah, a total of 2 lakh cusec water shall be released on Tuesday morning from the Ukai dam. In 2006, Surat had witnessed one of the worst floods when most of the city went under water after over 10 lakh cusec of water was released from Ukai.

The dam has already reached the capacity of 335.16 feet as opposed to the danger mark of 345 feet. The outflow was about 22,730 cusec, while the inflow remained much higher at 86, 300 cusec. Later the inflow further increased forcing the authorities to raise the discharge level. The officials also said that the catchment areas in MP and Maharashtra have not recorded heavy rains and therefore the situation may not be too grave. However, the inflow and outflow are likely to remain higher.

Meawhile, precautionary measures have already been undertaken by the municipal authorities to tackle any impending threat. The water levels in the dam and the nearby Tapi river are being monitored. Disaster control teams have been placed and dewatering pumps have been deployed to control any flooding in the low lying areas.
